Equestrian opportunities around Charlotte

Some of you have asked about equestrian events in the Weddington area. Since I have ridden hunter/jumpers for most of my life, I certainly know a few places to board or with nice horses and ponies for all levels of experience. Equestrian communities have also become popular on the outskirts of town. Union County is horse country! And so is North Charlotte!

The Charlotte area has beautiful farms with wonderful boarding facilities as well as neighborhoods on the outskirts of town designated as equestrian communities. Hunter/jumper and dressage lessons are available, as well as trail riding. There are shows, fox hunts and many clinics in addition to weekly lessons. Please contact me for additional information and recommendations.

Many people are moving just over the Union County line to Weddington, Waxhaw, Marvin, and Wesley Chapel because of the lower taxes and good schools...and to be closer to their horses and ponies. The Fort Mill area, to the south of Ballantyne in South Carolina,  is growing rapidly as well, with many new and beautiful subdivisions.

In April, the Charlotte Jumper Classic comes to town at the Bobcats Arena. It is one of the most exciting show jumping events in the nation. The three-day competition attracts internationally acclaimed equestrians and their mounts to compete for $700,000 in prize money. McClain Ward, who is slated for the 2008 Olympics and is pictured left, is a regular competitor in the Charlotte Grand Prix. It also holds jumper classes for junior, adult and ameteur riders. You can see other notable competitors at the Jumper Classic including Molly Ashe from my hometown Knoxville, TN, Georgiana Bloomberg, Mayor Bloomberg of NYC's daughter and our very own Paige Johnson, daughter of the Charlotte Bobcats owner and founder of BET, Bob Johnson. Hope to see you there!

Where is my favorite place to ride?

Often I'm asked this "loaded question" as I have been fortunate to have many friends in the local equestrian community. Below are a few of our local stables that offer lessons, boarding, show services and safe mounts for all levels of riders. While there are other reputable stables, I personally know these trainers and/or owners as well as other happy riders, pony/horse owners at these farms and please tell them I sent you. Contact me for more information and happy riding!
